LCD Soundsystem was one of our favorite bands. Now Lance Bangs’ film documenting their final days is rapidly becoming one of our favorite movies. The film “Shut Up and Play the Hits” captures LCD Soundsystem’s preparations for their now famous set of last shows at Madison Square Garden.

Director Lance Bangs, who has been following the band forever (and who you may recognize because he also directed “Inside Portlandia”) brought together stories of the band and their fans in a series of four videos. The first video, “LCD + NYC,” pays tribute to the relationship between New York City and the band, which produces more than a few heartstring-tugging moments, but what we’re most excited about is that the documentary features interviews with comedians such as Comedy Bang! Bang!’s Reggie Watts, Nick Kroll and Jason Woliner.

The second episode, “The Hits,” is devoted to LCD Soundsystem’s toe-tapping songs that filled dance floors around the globe. Once again the video features interviews with Nick Kroll, Aziz Ansari, and our man, Reggie Watts. Stay tuned for parts three and four from The Creator’s Project, which will be released in the days leading up to the film’s release on July 18th.

Don’t know about you, but here at IFC, we like to laugh. Which is why we’re sponsoring the LA Riot Comedy Festival, happening this weekend September 21-23 in Los Angeles. There are over 30 shows and over 100 performers, meaning lots and lots of chances to laugh. Plus: Free Beer!

The festival features a lot of our favorite people, including Marc Maron, whose show is coming to IFC next year. He’ll be staging a live show of his popular WTF podcast featuring Eddie Pepitone, Andy Dick, and Lance Bangs, who directed the “Inside Portlandia” documentary, proving that we are all one big happy family around here. Nick Kroll, who you may recognize from that time he made beautiful music with Reggie Watts, and Paul F. Tompkins who is a regular on Comedy Bang! Bang! will both be there, too, as will Jon Dore, Patton Oswalt, and a million other comics that we love and admire.

If you’re in the greater LA area, you should go buy a pass right now! For more information, head to riotla.com, like Riot LA on Facebook and follow the festival @riotla on Twitter. Also, watch this video:

The second season of Comedy Bang! Bang! is just getting started, but it’s already taking a toll on the health and well-being of its invaluable host Scott Aukerman. This week, tragedy has struck and Scott is sick! Luckily there’s an elite team headed up by Law & Order: SVU star Chris Meloni along with Echo Kellum, Kulap Vilaysack who are ready willing and able to be dispatched inside Scott’s body to fix him while he interviews Parks and Recreation star Aziz Ansari and craft services coordinator Fabrice Fabrice (Nick Kroll). Scott uses his public platform to teach the world an important lesson about bathroom hygiene and then he gets a little too friendly with Aziz and his bodyguard (Cedric Yarborough). Well, it looks friendly anyway:

It all happens tonight when a brand-new episode of Comedy Bang! Bang! airs tonight starting at 10/9c. Want a sneak peek? Watch here as Aziz introduces his emoji movie and here where Aziz makes music with resident bandleader Reggie Watts.

The 10 Best Comedy Sketches of 2015

$
0
0

In many ways, this was the year of the sketch. Granted, that could be said for 2014, or 2013, or probably most years since SNL and the Internet were invented. Still, with world-class series like Kroll Show and Key & Peele bowing out, and all-timers like David Cross and Bob Odenkirk returning to the form, it was truly a special year in sketch comedy. Here are some of the very best to grace our television and computer screens over the last year.

10. “Rocky Horror Halloween Show,” Comedy Bang! Bang!

The Comedy Bang! Bang! gang pulled out all the stops for their Halloween episode, perfectly spoofing “Time Warp” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show right down to Brad’s stiff delivery and Kid Cudi‘s spot-on Riff Raff impression. Once you’ve seen Scott in a dress and wig, there’s no going back.

9. “Father Daughter Ad,” Saturday Night Live

There was some controversy surrounding this sketch when SNL aired it earlier this year, but in an era where the show far too often plays it safe, it was nice to see them take a big swing. Taking on the commercialization of war, and the radicalization of recruits by ISIS, this ad parody has something to say, outside of the usual “aren’t commercials weird???” For that alone, it’s worth a look.

8. “Reality House,” Comedy Bang! Bang!

The brilliance of Comedy Bang! Bang! lies in taking the conventions of television, and turning them against themselves. Whether upending what a talk show is supposed to be, or highlighting the absurdity of reality television, CBB knows the best way to destroy TV is from within. Here Scott Aukerman hosts a reality show with no apparent purpose or rules. We watch as the contestants slowly lose their minds trying to understand what the hell is happening. “I’m not here to make friends…am I?”

7. “Know Your Rights,” W/ Bob and David

It’s been 17 years since Mr. Show went off the air, but the influence of David Cross and Bob Odenkirk’s sketch series is still felt today. Combining an indie comedy sensibility with a classic sketch format, the show wove together different bits to tell a larger story. Then, as now, this style keeps any one sketch from going on too long, or making the show feel like a bunch of disjointed jokes without purpose. The duo’s recent Netflix series, W/ Bob and David, fits in perfectly to the Mr. Show legend. It’s edgy, smart and absurd in equal measure, just like its predecessor. Reuniting with fellow Mr. Show alums like Scott Aukerman and Paul F. Tompkins, Cross and Odenkirk show they still know how to wring laughs out of some surprising premises, like in this sketch, where an insufferable troll will do anything to prove that cops can’t be trusted.

6. “Angela Mackenzie-Ng Performs…,” Kroll Show

Kroll Show is another sketch comedy series that ended its run this year, and though it went off the air to less fanfare than Key & Peele, it was no less brilliant. A truly monumental takedown of the media landscape we’re all subjected to, comedian Nick Kroll brilliantly decided to use the various characters he’d invented over the years to tell larger stories that lasted the length of the show’s three season run. No one sketch can completely stand alone without losing a little context, but if one bit has to represent the incredible final season, this spoof of singing competition shows and Canadian customs is as good as any. With Oh Hello now enjoying a sold out, Off-Broadway run, here’s to lots more “Bleep Bloop” in our future.

5. “Football Town Nights,” Inside Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer went from a funny comedian to an icon this year, largely thanks to her sketch show, which reached extraordinary new heights. While the episode “12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer” was one of the most brilliant things to air on all of television this year, it’s hard to consider the episode-length 12 Angry Men spoof a sketch. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of brilliant sketches that combine Schumer’s unique point of view and brash style. Afraid of nothing, Schumer took on any number of taboo subjects throughout the season, but perhaps none seems as inherently unfunny as rape. And yet, the show found a take that made it both challenging to the audience and drop dead hilarious.

4. “Weirdos Courtroom,” Portlandia

Portlandia is about to enter its sixth season, and shows no signs of slowing down. The Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein series beefed up plot in season five, telling comprehensive stories made up of various sketches. “Weirdos Courtroom,” starring Pee-wee himself Paul Reubens, isn’t just hilarious — it feels like a summation of the show’s offbeat point of view.

3. “Neurotology Music Video,” Saturday Night Live

Hot on the heels of Going Clear, Alex Gibney’s searing portrait of Scientology, SNL took the religion head on, taking aim at both its absurdity and the organization’s more nefarious secrets. A pitch perfect take on the church’s recruitment efforts, the one knock on this sketch may be that its hard to out do the ridiculousness of the church’s own music video.

2. “Negrotown,” Key & Peele

A true tour-de-force for Key & Peele‘s final season, this is by far the most ambitious sketch the show ever attempted. A cutting look at race relations in America, played out against the vibrant backdrop of movie musicals, this sketch lists just about every grievance one could have against the systemic racism in our county. Oh, and it’s funny to boot. No sketch better exemplifies that Key & Peele ended their five-year run as strong as ever.

1. “Last F*ckable day,” Inside Amy Schumer

If any sketch broke the Internet this year, this has to be the one. The combination of identifying a crystal clear comedic concept that we’d never seen before, catching a wave of feminism in comedy and upping the ante, and then employing a truly all-star cast made this, by far, the sketch of the year. In a year when Amy Schumer could do no wrong, this one took the cake.

Steve Harvey’s Existential Hell, Lonely Island Compliments Battle and More of This Week’s Funniest Videos

With the weather getting hotter and humidified, the temptation to lock yourself in an air-conditioned living room becomes overwhelming. But rather than bathe yourself in agoraphobic shame, embrace the privacy and enjoy some goofy videos.

From Steve Harvey contemplating his life to the “Oh Hello” guys talking “the-ater” on Comedy Bang! Bang!, here are five funny things from this week you need to watch.

1. Steve Harvey Doesn’t Want to Host Family Feud Anymore

Interacting with one dumb family would be bad enough, but every Family Feud host has had to deal with two clans of mouth-breathers per episode. And judging from this video from the always-great Vic Berger, it appears Steve Harvey has heard one clueless (and falsely praised) answer too many.

2. The Oh Hello Guys Talk Broadway

Upper West Siders George St. Geegland (John Mulaney) and Gil Faizon (Nick Kroll) stopped by Comedy Bang! Bang! this week to talk about their upcoming Broadway show and how both Hamilton‘s Lin Manuel-Miranda and Cats have ripped them off.

3. The Lonely Island Enjoy a Compliments Battle

The Lonely Island (who also appear on tonight’s Comedy! Bang! Bang! season premiere) recently participated in an In Your Face Compliments Battle, which essentially entails the delivery and bravado of a rap battle but with the kindness and effusive praise of a greeting card.

4. Whiplashup

J.K. Simmons earned a well-deserved Oscar for his red-faced, brutally-tough-love performance of a demanding music teacher in Whiplash. And through clever edits and mixing, Eclectic Method’s Johnny Wilson and 16-year-old Genranon turned the film’s jazz soundtrack into a high-energy rave. (You probably also want to check out new Comedy Bang! Bang! band leader “Weird Al” in College Humor’s Whiplash parody.)

5. Undercover Lyft with Shaquille O’Neal

The professional ride-sharers at Lyft have launched a YouTube series entitled Undercover Lyft, which casts celebrities as Lyft drivers picking up unsuspecting passengers. Of course, going undercover is damn near impossible for someone like Shaquille O’Neal, but we won’t let that detract from a 7′ 1″, 325 lb. center in a Harpo wig. (For more ride share fun, check out Portlandia‘s Talkative Driver series.)

5 Hilarious “Oh, Hello” Videos

Few comics joke to the beat of their own drummer as much as Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. Eschewing the traditional route of sitcom stardom, the longtime friends and comedy partners have built their reputations on underground appeal and a menagerie of bizarre characters, none more popular than Gil Faizon (Kroll) and George St. Geegland (Mulaney), the Alan Alda-loving, turtleneck-wearing, erotic massage-enjoying stars of “The Oh, Hello Show.”

Kroll and Mulaney began performing the characters in the early ’00s, on the alt comedy stage of New York City. Honed over a decade, the duo soon found their way onto online videos, late night couches and talks at 92Y, the Upper East Side venue where you might see a few George and Gil lookalikes. Wherever they went, they brought their coy racism and love of tuna. With the two classy gents stopping by the Comedy Bang! Bang! premiere (which you can watch right now on IFC.com and the IFC app), we thought we’d revisit some of their finest moments. Just don’t tell Gil’s ex wife, or she’ll want a cut for her alimony checks.

5. The YouTubes

Even in their early videos, Gil and George feel fully formed. Here they creep out Gil’s ex-wife, whose name he took without permission. (You’ll have to watch to find out his real last name.)

4. The Yoga Session

In another video from their Web series days, Gil and George enjoy a drug and booze-fueled yoga session with Mona Mimosa, played by podcaster and Difficult People star Julie Klausner.

3. The Bachelors Live

Perhaps their most bizarre (and controversial) guest spot came on The Bachelor after show, where their caustic mentions of eczema cream and “ka-caine” led to a reality show loving revolt on Twitter.

2. The Krolles Show

A cult hit, Kroll Show allowed star Nick Kroll to run wild with his plethora of characters. Everyone from Bobby Bottleservice to Fabrice Fabrice was given their chance to shine, but few were more popular than tuna pranking partners George St. Geegland and Gil Faizon.

1. The Off-Brud-way show

With Kroll Show wrapping up, the boys took their “Oh, Hello” crew on the road. After a sold out, critically-acclaimed Off-Broadway run, Gil and George hit the road for a national tour. Could Brud-way be next?

Watch a clip from the “Oh, Hello” boys’ appearance on Comedy Bang! Bang!. You can also catch John Mulaney on the 2016 Oddball Comedy & Curiosity Festival.

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney To Host Spirit Awards

The 2017 Spirit Awards have finally found their frontmen: Nick Kroll and John Mulaney. And it’s no wonder. Just marvel in their splendid chemistry back when they appeared on Comedy Bang! Bang!:

The pair are prolific within the performing arts community: television (Kroll in The League and The Kroll Show, Mulaney as a writer of IFC’s own Documentary Now!), theater (including Broadway’s current Oh Hello Show), and stand-up comedy. In fact, it’s entirely possible that emceeing an awards show is one of the few remaining line items on their professional bucket lists.

It’s important to caveat this announcement, however. Unlike the bigger and more ubiquitously known awards shows, the Spirit Awards are not, well…boring. (We’re talking to you, Oscar.)

They’re funny. They’re honest. They have quality to match the red-carpet fanfare. And that’s alarmingly special. Last year’s show included some legitimately historic moments, like when transgender actress Mya Taylor won best supporting female, or Kate McKinnon’s hilarious and timely parody of Carol. See more highlights here to get the flavor of the Spirit Awards and read all about Film Independent to dig deeper.

The 2017 Spirit Awards air live February 25 at 5P ET exclusively on IFC.

Two New Ways to Threeway

This week, two scandalous new digital series debut on IFC’s Comedy Crib.
Ménage à Trois invites people to participate in a real-life couple’s fantasy boudoir. And The Filling is Mutual follows two saucy chefs who invite comedians to make food inspired by their routines. Each show crosses some major boundaries in sexy and/or delicious ways, and each are impossible to describe in detail without arousing some awkward physical cravings. Which is why it’s best to hear it directly from the minds behind the madness…

Ménage à Trois

According to Diana Kolsky and Murf Meyer, the two extremely versatile constants in the ever-shifting à trois, “MàT is a sensually psychedelic late night variety show exploring matters of hearts, parts and every goddamn thing in between…PS, any nudes will be 100% tasteful.”

This sexy brainchild includes sketches, music, and props that would put Pee-wee’s Playhouse to shame. But how could this fantastical new twist on the vanilla-sex variety show format have come to be?

“We met in a UCB improv class taught by Chris Gethard. It was clear that we both humped to the beat of our own drum; our souls and tongues intermingled at the bar after class, so we dove in head first.”

Sign me up, but promise to go slow. This tricycle is going to need training wheels.

The Filling is Mutual

Comedians Jen Saunderson and Jenny Zigrino became best friends after meeting in the restroom at the Gotham Comedy Club, which explains their super-comfortable dynamic when cooking with their favorite comedians. “We talk about comedy, sex, menses, the obnoxiousness of Christina Aguilera all while eating food that most would push off their New Year’s resolution.”

The hook of cooking food based off of comedy routines is so perfect and so personal. It made us wonder about what dishes Jen & Jenny would pair with some big name comedy staples, like…

Bill Murray?
“Oh, that’s easy Meatballs with Lingonberry Space Jam it’d be great, but then we’d have to Oh, that’s easy Meatballs with Lingonberry Space Jam it’d be great, but then we’d have to… Oh, that’s easy Meatballs with Lingonberry Space Jam it’d be great, but then we’d have to avoid doing any kind of silly Groundhog Day reference.”

Bridget Everett?
“Cream Balls… Sea Salt encrusted Chocolate Ganache Covered Ice Cream Ball that melt cream when you bite into them.”

Nick Kroll & John Mulaney?
“I’d make George and Gil black and white cookies from scratch and just as we open the oven to put the cookie in we’d prank ’em with an obnoxious amount of tuna!!!”

Carrie Brownstein & Fred Armisen?
“Definitely a raw cacao “safe word” brownie. Cacao!”

Just perfect.

See both new series in their entirety on IFC’s Comedy Crib.

Find Your Spirit Animal

In just a few precious days, the greatest, most epic, most star-studded awards ceremony of the year comes to IFC.

And please, we’re definitely not talking about the Oscars. We’re talking about the Spirit Awards. Hosted by iconic comedy duo Nick Kroll and John Mulaney, it’s a relatively under-the-radar awards show with serious cred. And if the past is any indicator, we’re in for a wild night.

If you feel like doing your homework, you can find a full list of nominees and performance excerpts here. It reads like a who’s who of everyone that matters – those larger-than-life personalities with status that borders on mythological. Our celebrity spirit animals, if you will.

This isn’t hyperbole. Literally everyone who takes the stage at the awards show is spirit animal material. Let’s see if we can help you find yours…

Do you

Live in someone else’s shadow despite shining like the sun? Do you inexplicably vandalize your pretty-boy good looks with a sloppy-joe man bun and a repellent pubic-hair beard? Do you think sounding stoned and sounding thoughtful are kinda the same thing?

Congratulations, your spirit animal is Casey Affleck.

He’s the self-canonized patron saint of anyone who’s got the goods but doesn’t give a damn.

Do you

Have mid-length hair and exude a certain feminine masculinity that is universally appealing? Are you drawn to situations that promise little to nothing in the way of grooming or hygiene as a transparently self-conscious attempt to conceal your radiant inner glow? Does that fail miserably?

Way to go, your spirit animal is Viggo Mortensen.

He’s the yoga teacher of actors, in that what should make him super nasty only increases his curb appeal.

Do you

Get zero recognition for work that everyone knows is unrivaled? Do you inspire greatness in others yet get shortchanged when it comes to your own acclaim? Are you a goddam B-52 bomber in an industry of biplanes?

Bingo, your spirit animal is Annette Bening.

What does it take for this artist to win an Oscar? Honestly now, if her performance in 20th Century Women doesn’t earn her every award on the planet, consider it proof that the Universe truly is a cold dark void absent of reason or compassion.

Do you

Walk into a room full of strangers and walk out with a room full of friends? Have you been hiding under the radar just waiting for the right moment to leap out into the spotlight and stay there FOREVER? Do you possess the almost messianic ability to elevate Shia LaBeouf’s on-screen charisma?

You guessed it (or not), your spirit animal is 100% Sasha Lane.

If you haven’t seen American Honey, then you haven’t heard of her. She came out of the blue with a performance both subtle and powerful, and now she’s going to be in all the movies from this moment on. Or she should be, at any rate.

Don’t see your spirit animal there? Worry not. There are many more nominees to choose from, and you can see them all (yes, including Shia LaBeouf) during the Independent Spirit Awards, this Saturday at 2pm PT/5pm ET only on IFC.

You Missed It, But Don’t Panic

The 2017 Independent Spirit Awards are over! Done! See you next year!
Moonlight won every award for which it was nominated, The Witch got some well-deserved rookie love, Nick Kroll & John Mulaney were perfect hosts, and Fred Armisen apparently died.

If you missed any of it, don’t freak. It’s 2017, which is the future. The magical immediacy of media technology will save you.

Watch the entire awards show, start to finish, on the IFC app or right here. RIGHT NOW. FOR FREE. Or, you know, whenever, because that’s the whole point.

If you’re still on the fence, don’t get comfortable. Here’s a sampler platter that’ll give you the flavor of everything that went down today. Fair warning: It’s real good.

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney

Perfect hosts. Perfect. Their opening routine was deadly funny, wicked smart, and invoked both David Lynch and Werner Herzog. A huge step up from the Academy Awards’ usual fart jokes, figuratively speaking.

Andy Samberg’s Surprise Cameo

We’ll never think of Eddie Vedder the same way again.

Best Supporting Female: Molly Shannon

Superstar! It’s been too easy to think of Molly exclusively in the context of her beloved characters, but her nuanced performance in Other People changes all of that. And man can she work a crowd.

Best Feature: Moonlight

This. Movie. We called it first, Oscar!

See the full list of winners here and enjoy the entire 2017 Spirit Awards now or anytime on IFC.com and the IFC app.
